Dog breeding, while rewarding, can be a tough task and you should make sure you are fully informed and well prepared in all aspects before getting into it.
Never get into breeding for the money. You should do it because you love dogs and you want to share your knowledge and your dog's prime bloodline with other people. There are two things to keep in mind before getting into dog breeding.
It's All About the Bloodline
- People who know about pedigree champs know which bloodlines have produced the best dogs. If you are thinking about eventually breeding your dog, make sure you purchase your puppy from a reputable owner. Make sure you research the bloodline and the kennel before making a purchase.
- You will need some time and effort, but it will pay off in the end. Speak to other dog breeders about which bloodlines they know have produced champion dogs.
- When you buy your puppy for breeding, make sure you get the birth certificate and the registration documents from the breeder. Make sure these are authentic and get them verified if you must. Ask the breeder for a copy of the parents' certificates as well as a copy of the dog's family history and family tree.
- This will enable you to have a 'selling point' once you start producing pups of your own. Having these documents is very important to those who want to show the dogs or breed them.
Dog Breeding Comes at a Price
- You will need to take extra special care of your dog. The best food, the best grooming and the best vet care are just some of the things you will need and you have got to be willing to pay for all of these things if dog breeding is something you are serious about. It's not all fun and games.
- Never get into dog breeding to make money. Do it for the love of the pets and because you believe in producing pure-bred champions and you want to share your knowledge and expertise with others.
