Tips to Prevent Laptops from Overheating

It can be a very frustrating experience to have laptops constantly overheating, which not only reduces their performance speed but can also cause long term damage to your computer, but there are a few simple methods that can help to stop this.

If you are experiencing problems with your laptop overheating you should first examine your physical device as well as keeping in mind what type of model you have. Both are important as they can both be factors in why the laptop is overheating.

Why laptops overheat

  • With certain types of laptop you can find problems occurring with overheating because it is staying rigid in the same flat position for a long time. Most laptops have a fan and cooling system in them but are often located at the back or on the underside of the device. This means that sometimes by obscuring or blocking this passage the laptop can become overheated quickly.
  • Make sure that you have the laptop sitting on some self adhesive rubber on all four corners. This slight elevation may not solve the problem completely but should help. These can be bought at any hardware store. It is also a good idea to check the air vents and blow gently with some canned air. This is just to help circulation.

Ways to prevent laptops from overheating

  • If your laptop is over a year old and you feel comfortable opening up the cover you should unscrew the bottom of the laptop to get a good look at the fan vent and heat sink. You can also buy coolers for laptops in hardware stores that are thin layers that sit between the cover and blow cool air through the system. These often substantially decrease the heat of the laptop.
  • You should also take into account what the laptop is being used for any how many external devices are connected to it. The more stress you put the device under the harder it has to work. So try to use external devices when only necessary.
  • You can also try changing the power settings of the laptop. By decreasing some of the operating system you can slow the workload and decrease the heat being exuded.
