A Quick Guide to Undercoating for Cars

Undercoating for cars is necessary in order to prevent against rust and corrosion and to make your car sound and feel more luxurious and smooth when on the road.

Undercoating deadens vehicle and road sounds, while providing a barrier against moisture and corrosion. A vehicle is an expensive investment, and using spray-on undercoating for cars is an easy and great way to keep your investment in good condition. The best undercoating for cars is one that is rubberized. This type of undercoating is available from any of the major auto part stores and is typically found in large spray cans. In addition to the undercoating, a set of safety glasses and a pair of gloves, similar to the surgical type used by doctors, should be purchased. Additionally, a few large, flattened boxes or a drop cloth will help to protect the floor from over-spray and/or undercoating drips.

Prepare the Vehicle for Undercoating
When undercoating for cars is applied, the vehicle’s under-carriage must be clean and dry. Using a garden hose with a spray-nozzle, select a strong spray setting and proceed to spray the under-carriage of the vehicle. Make sure to spray under the bumpers, around wheel wells, and around the gas tank. This will rid the vehicle of debris and dirt, and provide a clean surface for the undercoating.

Applying the Undercoating
Perform this procedure inside a garage because the ground will be flat and smooth. This is important because you will be lying on the ground spraying the under-carriage. Place the floor covering down, and drive the vehicle onto the covered area. Spraying undercoating for cars will be much simpler if the vehicle is raised off the ground. Jack-up one end of the vehicle high enough to slide under it. Ensure the tires at the other end of the vehicle are blocked from rolling. Put on the gloves and eye-protection, and slide under the vehicle. Spray the underside using deliberate strokes. Ensure all surfaces, including wheel wells, are evenly coated. A second or third application may be added if desired. Lower the vehicle and repeat the procedure for the other end of the vehicle.
