The internet is a useful resource for kids to learn, play, and chat with friends, but it´s also a potential danger and internet safety is a big concern which should be addressed by parents around the world.
In the last couple of years the internet has become very popular even for small children, and a child predator can get close to kids easier than ever before. To prevent such a horrible incident, parents must prepare their children to be safe on the internet.
Dangers Involving Personal Information
- One of the most important internet safety rules is never to give any personal information, like your name, email address, phone number, address, school, or anything else to strangers. Also don't post them on online profiles, on social networking sites, or forums, and avoid posting personal pictures.
- If a stranger asks for any of these don't forget that you never know who you're talking to. Kids should never talk to a stranger on the street, so why should it be different when they are online.
- Prepare the kids for dangerous situations. It is important to sit down and explain the dangers of talking to strangers, or even meeting someone they know from the internet. Whenever a stranger want to see a picture, or asks for personal information, or wants to meet or be friends, the child should always report it to his parents instantly. Kids must be aware that a lot of people lie online about their identity, and even about their age and sex.
Monitoring Online Activity
- It's always best to watch your child while he/she uses the internet. If that's not possible, there are online monitoring programs that also filter the content to which kids get access. This increases internet safety considerably. Knowing the kid's passwords also lets parents check emails and social networking sites.
- It's way too easy to find explicit sexual material on the internet. To increase internet safety you can use a content-filtering utility or a special program that blocks unwanted sites.
