How To Wash Carpets Yourself

No one likes to wash carpets, but it need not be a hassle. With the right preparation and know-how, you can enjoy all the benefits of a clean carpet.

Having clean carpets can really transform a room as well as making it much more hygienic. Performing some easy maintenance makes it much easier when you wash carpets, and keeps them looking new.

Preparation

  • Vacuum carefully before you start to wash carpets. This will prevent dirt from building up inside the carpet fibres, and will also remove allergens such as pollen and dust.

  • Split the room into quarters and focus on one section at a time, slowly vacuuming to remove the maximum amount of dirt. This will make it much easier when you start to wash the carpets.

Steam Cleaning

  • Contact cleaning companies to rent a steam cleaner which is designed to wash carpets. Usually, you load these with carpet shampoo, and use the cleaner like a normal vacuum. The cleaner will wet the carpet, and suck up the dirty water. Use the cleaner slowly over the whole carpet, focusing on areas where there is heavy foot traffic.

  • Once the carpet has completely dried, check for any individual stains. Once you know how to wash carpets, it’s much easier to cope with these as they happen, to prevent the stain from setting into the carpet.

Home Remedies

  • You can use a blend of vinegar and water to wash carpets and remove faint stains. Add one cup of vinegar to every gallon of water you need, and blend well.

  • For stains with a red tint, such as red wine or tomato sauce, make a peroxide mix. Stir 4 spoons of peroxide into 9 spoons of water until the mixture is completely blended. Apply to the stain a spoon at a time, until the stain is completely covered. Leave the mixture for 20 -30 minutes, and dry the floor using paper towels. Wash out the peroxide with the vinegar/water mix mentioned above.

  • Apply a very small amount of brake fluid to a cloth to wash carpets with food stains. Do not apply the brake fluid straight onto the stain. Blot the stain with the brake fluid, and wash the stain using soap and water.
