Food and Drink

  • Drink less caffeine. Yes, that good old cup of coffee or even green or white tea may be able to boost your metabolism by up to 5% if you drink enough cups in a day. So if you want to slow your metabolism down it's time to cut down your intake.
  • Having larger meals fewer times a day will also help slow your metabolism down as every time we eat we speed up our metabolism. Since higher calories snacks might help you put on weight, avoid snacking on low calorie foods. Make sure you're eating enough calories; aim for at least five hundred calories above your energy requirements when aiming to put on weight.
  • Foods that are high in fat and sugar also help to put on weight by stoking your insulin levels and promoting growth hormones. You could also try adding extra calories to your meals by using sauces and gravies. Another good tip to help you eat larger portions is to use a larger plate or bowl. Drinking lots of juice and full fat milk throughout the day is another way to easily add a few extra calories to your diet.

Activity and Rest

  • It may be best to cut down on exercising as this speeds your metabolism up. Weight training can also help boost metabolism but may be necessary if you are trying to gain muscle rather than fat. Avoid exercising in the evening as this leads to you burning more calories the next day.
  • If you still insist on doing cardio, do less intensive exercise and avoid interval training as both of these can speed up your metabolism. To slow your metabolism down even further, consider resting, sitting or laying down for longer periods and sleeping more as you will burn fewer calories this way.
  • If you continue to be unable to slow your metabolism down go to your doctor as it may be a thyroid or other health problem.
