How to Remove the Smell of Pet Urine from your Furniture

Since the smell of urine on your furniture can leave a bad impression on visitors and can also annoy the occupants of your home, you must learn how to remove the smell of pet urine from your furniture by using a few home remedies.

Before you remove the smell of pet urine from your furniture you must identify why your pet is urinating in the house. Pets that are not yet toilet trained, pets suffering from urinary incontinence and those that succumb to urine marking are likely to urinate in different areas of your home. If your pet has been toilet trained, a visit to the vet will help you identify whether the dog is suffering from incontinence or any other medical problem. If the problem is chronic in nature you will have to find ways to remove the smell of pet urine from your furniture so that the air in your home doesn’t reek of urine.

How to Remove the Smell of Pet Urine from your Furniture

  • If your dog has urinated on your bedding or couch you will have to first dry out excess urine with a paper towel to prevent it from getting thoroughly absorbed by the furniture. Next, sprinkle some baking soda on the area and allow it to remain for about two hours. Baking soda works effectively to remove strong odors in the home. Vacuum the baking soda after an hour or two and then use a mixture of diluted white vinegar on the area. To make this mixture, dilute half a cup of white vinegar with half a cup of water and pour it into a spritzer bottle. Allow the mixture to penetrate the upholstery and then wipe it off with a soft clean cloth. Finally, try to move your furniture into a sunny area of your home if not outdoors. Allow it to dry out completely before you bring it back in.

Preventative measures

  • If your dog is suffering from incontinence you could also cover your furniture with plastic so that the urine doesn’t seep into the upholstery. Make sure you clean up accidents as soon as they happen as this will prevent the urine from staining the furniture. You can also purchase commercially available furniture sprays that neutralize odors in the home. Spray these on your couches only after the upholstery has been completely dried out. To keep your home smelling fresh, you could also boil a pot of hot water with two cinnamon sticks and two cloves. The aroma of the cinnamon should be enough to remove the smell of pet urine from your furniture. If your pet is suffering from incontinence avoid punishing him as this is a medical condition over which your dog has no control.
