Despite the amount of stress our feet are put through on a regular basis, they can often go neglected, which can sometimes lead to unpleasant conditions such as cracked heels.
The feet bear the full weight of our bodies, which puts a great deal of pressure on the soles that only intensifies with any excessive activity, such as running or long periods of standing. In addition to other factors, these circumstances can result in cracked heels and it is essential to be aware of the steps for the prevention and cure of what can be a painful and unsightly condition.
Treat your feet
- To prevent the problem of cracked heels occurring, it is important to look after the feet in the same way that the rest of the body is cared for. Avoid spending long periods of time in wet shoes or wearing shoes on your bare feet without the benefit of some form of hosiery. Excessive moisture can often negatively affect the skin of the feet and be the cause of cracked heels. Invest in jogging shoes that are properly cushioned and ventilated to offer benefits when the feet need it most. Allow your feet to breathe whenever possible rather than keeping them encased in shoes at all times.
- Cracked heels often occur because the skin has thickened, which will need to be rectified to cure the problem. Carefully exfoliate your heels using a pumice stone after softening your skin by soaking the feet in warm water. Do not go overboard and moisturise your feet afterwards with a lotion specifically designed for the feet and re-apply every time you wash your feet. If possible, avoid standing for long periods.
Implement beneficial dietary changes
- The skin is the largest organ of the body and must be given as much concern as the other organs of the body. As with other illnesses and conditions, a poor diet and bad practices can be one of the causes of cracked heels. By over indulging in alcohol and smoking can be the cause of cracked heels as they sap the vitamins and minerals from the body. Both smoking and drinking should be kept to a minimum if not given up completely. A diet high in saturated fats and lacking in fruit and vegetables can lead to the skin being left in poor condition, so a varied and healthy diet must be maintained, which includes oily fish rich in omega 3 oils.
