How To Make Your Own Wall Clock

Learning how to make a wall clock is relatively straightforward and requires only a few tools and a lot of imagination.

Quartz movements and clock hands, can be easily obtained from any craft or hobby shop, and are not expensive. However, if this is the first attempt at a self-made wall clock, it is perhaps a good idea to use wood for the main body of the time piece, as it will need to be drilled in order to fit the Quartz movement. The face of the clock can be either painted using acrylic paint, or varnished if preferred. The wood can also be covered using various types of fabric such as faux, in which case the fabric will need to be glued to the face and the rear.

What You Will Need

  • A self-made wall clock can be constructed using materials of choice. However, irrespective of the materials used, a quartz clock movement and hands, pencil and ruler, acrylic paint, stickers of numbers or stencils, a drill, screwdriver, glue and picture hangers will all be required.

How To Make

  • After deciding the desired shape and size of the wood for the self-made wall clock, use a pencil and ruler to mark the centre of the wood, taking care to ensure that you mark the exact centre position. Drill the centre that has been marked with a fine drill bit.
  • Mark the numbers on the wood, using stickers, stencils or, by freehand using acrylic paints. Take the quartz movement and clock dials and insert into the centre of the piece, ensuring that the dials are on the face of the clock and the movement, including the battery and winder mechanism, are at the rear. Ensure that the clock movement and hands are securely fitted.

Hanging The Clock

  • Decide where the self-made wall clock will be hung and attach a picture hanger at the rear, using a screwdriver. Fix the other picture hanger to the wall and hang the wall clock.
