Constructing a barbecue pit in your own garden is surprisingly easy and requires only the simple materials of cinder blocks and a couple sheets of gauge steel.
Barbecue pits are one of the most effective ovens for cooking meat, and are ideal for summer parties and family gatherings. Instead of purchasing a commercial cooker for thousands of dollars, constructing a homemade barbecue pit in your garden is an inexpensive, easy, and fun alternative that can be just as effective.
Materials
- Constructing a barbecue pit is a very inexpensive process. In fact, you will be able to find all that you need at your local hardware store. The foundation and walls of the pit itself will be made out of cinder blocks.
- The surface that your food will actually cook on will be a sheet of expanded metal the same length and width as the cooker itself. To cover the top of the cooker you will need a piece of sheet metal the same size as the expanded metal. You will need one additional sheet of metal the height and width of the cooker to cover up the fuel hole at the end of the pit.
Construction
- Before constructing your pit you must first consider what you will be cooking to determine how large to make it. Once its size is determined proceed with laying a rectangular foundation of cinder blocks stacked two high.
- When laying the foundation make sure to leave one end of the rectangle open for a fuel hole. Once your foundation is down, cover it with the sheet of expanded metal and then sandwich it between another layer of cinder block walls. For larger meats such as an entire hog you will need to add another layer of cinder block.
- Once your walls are up proceed with covering the entire pit with the large solid piece of sheet metal. This will be removed when you are placing your food on the grate. Similarly, the fuel hole at the end of barbecue pit can be covered with the additional sheet of metal when wood is not being added.
