How to Install Bass Blockers in a New Car

It’s a quick and easy job to install bass blockers in a new car, a job only requires simple tools, an hour of your time and a little bit of know-how.

Bass blockers can be an important part of your car audio setup, and anyone can install bass blockers in a new car. They can help to protect other pieces of your car audio equipment. An expensive car audio solution may involve two or three separate sets of speakers to handle a single signal. These can include tweeters, which handle the high frequency ranges; mid-range speakers, which handle everything except the very high and very low frequencies; and a sub-woofer, which will handle the bass frequencies.

What does a bass blocker do?

  • A bass blocker is essentially a filter that will strip the bass from an audio signal, and stops a bass signal travelling to speakers that are designed to handle high and mid frequencies.

How to install bass blockers in a new car

  • The first step to install bass blockers in a new car is to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery by removing the cable attached to it. This cable will be black and can be removed using an appropriate socket set.
  • Make yourself familiar with the speaker mounting before you install bass blockers in a new car, including how the speaker is attached. You may need to refer to your car’s specific repair manual for instructions on how to disassemble your speaker mounting.
  • Working on one speaker at a time, remove the mounting so that you can safely and accurately access the speakers. Refer to the repair manual’s wiring diagrams to identify the speaker’s positive wire.
  • On the positive wire, measure six inches away from the terminal and cut the wire using wire cutters. Strip approximately three eighths of an inch of insulation from both ends of the cut speaker wire.
  • Get a male spade connector and crimp it to the speaker side wire, and crimp a female spade connector to the stereo side of the wire using wire crimpers.
  • The bass blocker is then placed between the speaker and the stereo by attaching the female spade connector of the bass blocker to the male spade connector of the speaker wire, which will be on the wire still attached to the speaker. The male crimp on the bass blocker is then attached to the female crimp on the speaker wire, on the stereo side of the cut wire.
  • To help protect this new installation, wrap electrical tape around the bass blocker and its terminals until it is covered. Replace the speakers and the mounting, leaving the car with the same appearance that you found it. Repeat this process for the remaining speakers until you have successfully installed bass speakers in a new car.
