How To Clean Household Drains

Keeping household drains clean isn’t something that we think about till, of course, the dreaded clog happens, and then we wish we had taken the time to clean the drains to prevent this from happening.

The common household drain can build up debris such as hair, grease and food.
Over time this debris can buildup and cause a clog in the system. So what can we do to avoid the dreaded clog in our household pipes? You can buy those plumbing products that can help us prevent a clog, but these can cost money and can contain harmful chemicals, so sometimes alternative tactics are needed. 

 

Cleaning Household Drains

  • Keep your kitchen drain plugs in the sink. This will stop any bits of food or any debris from getting into your drains. It is also beneficial to rinse your sink after you have finished using it.

 

  • Baking soda, white vinegar and salt. Baking soda along, with the other ingredients, will breakdown the debris that is in your household pipes. The proper components to use is half a box of baking soda, a half bottle of white vinegar and a tablespoon of salt. Pour down pipe and wait a half hour for optimal results.

 

  • Plunge Pipes. This is important to do if the water is starting to flow slowly through the drains. This is a sign that a clog is starting to form. Place some hot water into the slow moving drain, cover all drain openings to get a good seal, then start to plunge. The water along with the plunging will help the debris come to the surface or be forced through the pipe.

Clog Prevention

  • Obviously the best way to keep your drains clean is to prevent any debris from clogging them, which is most effectively done with the use of a plug. Also, a quick rinse every month should help snub out any possibilities of a clog before it gets a chance to build up.
