Although, uncomfortable heat rashes are usually not a serious condition. As the name suggests, they are most common in hot and humid countries with young children being especially susceptible. Because of this, it is important for parents to take proper precautions when taking their kids on holidays to hot countries.
What causes heat rash?
When the body starts to heat up it sweats to cool itself and so regulate its temperature. If it gets overheated, however, it may produce too much perspiration that may then block the sweat ducts. This causes the little red spots which burst and then feel itchy, prickly and sore. The rash is usually worst where clothes rub the skin or in the skin creases because these are the areas that sweat the most.
How to avoid heat rash
It is very important to keep the body as cool and dry as possible to avoid the excessive sweating that triggers the problem. Try and stay in the shade and avoid overexerting yourself in the heat. Air-conditioning and fans can also help in keeping you cool. Wearing loose, light clothing made from natural fibres such as cotton is recommended as these allow the air to get to the skin and circulate. Sleeping on cotton sheets is also recommended. Take cooling baths or showers and dry yourself thoroughly and make sure that you keep yourself properly hydrated. Taking antihistamines for one to two weeks before and then during your holiday may also help reduce the risk of suffering in the sun. Following these simple tips will help ensure that you have an enjoyable holiday free of the annoyance and discomfort of heat rash.
