How to Prevent Children Choosing Weird Names for Pets

When adding a new member to the family, whether it be a dog, a cat or even a goldfish; it is almost guaranteed that your children are going to want to pick the name and making sure that they pick one the is suitable isn’t always an easy task.

The best way to pet your child giving your new French poodle a ridiculous name is to hold a family meeting to discuss the new member of the house. Explain to everyone in the family that they can submit one name each so the family can then make a vote. Be up front and tell them that weird names are not allowed. Most children will want to make their parents proud and will do their best not to choose weird names for their pets. Weird names can also be avoided for your pets by asking your children to come up with a name that starts with a certain letter. Many families choose their children’s name in this method and you could do the same thing with your pets. While a few different names may come up, it can reduce their chance of weird names.

Younger children, however, may not process what would be considered weird names. In this instance, it may be better for the parents to make the suggestions to their child. Instead of telling the child to come up with the name themselves, tell them that you are going to give them the different options and they get to choose which ones they like. This is often the best way to avoid weird names for your pets.

When a family acquires new pets, naming them should be fun. Of course, as the parent, you want to avoid the weird names.
