A Gorgeous Glow: Japanese Hanging Lanterns

There are many design ideas that have taken inspiration from other cultures, but very few are as striking and elegant as Japanese hanging lanterns.

Japanese hanging lanterns are the perfect addition to any room, thanks to their soft edges, varying patterns, and gentle illumination. Used indoors or outdoors, these lanterns provide both light and beauty for everything from large events to intimate evenings inside. A single larger lantern can be hung or set in the center of a table as a glowing focal point, or strings of colorful "mini" Japanese hanging lanterns can be hung along the edges of walls or the covered top of a porch for a joyful festive look.

Lovely Luminescent Lanterns
While the traditional variety of these lanterns will have a tealight candle holder inside, those that are hesitant to use an open flame can opt for a flickering LED candle instead, or simply buy one of the many electric versions available today. Japanese hanging lanterns are usually built of stiff colored or patterned paper around a ribbed metal framework, so they keep their shape well, even when hung outside. Paper lanterns can be kept outside, but should be kept covered, on a roofed porch or similar structure. When using Japanese hanging lanterns with a real candle it is very important to consider the space distance from the roof or ceiling, as well as the hanging material: lanterns hung too close to a surface, or hung with flammable string, may be a fire hazard. If true outdoor use is desired, look for plastic versions of these lanterns - some new plastic models even come with a built-in solar panel for continuous light.

Hues in Harmony
As with most objects in Japanese culture, the color red is seen as a particularly auspicious or lucky color, so red Japanese hanging lanterns are some of the most popular. If a more subtle look is sought, kimono-like patterns that feature cherry blossoms or scenes from nature are beautiful when lit from within. Match your lantern to your decor and you'll enjoy a uniquely elegant light source that will delight evening after evening.
