Geocaching Gear- What You Will Need

Although there is no set amount or type of gear needed to go geocaching, having the right geocaching gear can mean the difference between a great experience and a miserable trip.

Depending upon which climate you will be caching, you will need to dress appropriately and plan ahead for unexpected weather conditions. If you are in the mountains or desert terrain, plan on carrying at least some cold weather gear. Even if the days are warm, mountain and desert temperatures can plummet quickly as the sun goes down. Quality footwear is also essential when planning your geocaching gear. Something that breathes and is water resistant will ensure that your feet feel good all the way through your adventure.

Tools
Even when traveling light, there are some tools that every geocacher needs to have to ensure safety and comfort. A flashlight will come in handy if you stay out on the trail after dark or you just want to explore a dark crevice you may come across. A first aid kit and sunscreen are also a definite necessity in your geocaching gear. Not only could an injury ruin your trip if not prepared, but they could also interfere with getting back to normal once home from your geocaching experience.

Keeping Your Bearings
There is no place to ask directions once you get out on the trail, so take along a few items to keep you on the right path. GPS seems like a no brainer when packing your geocaching gear. You can plan way points, mark the location of your vehicle and mark spots where exciting discoveries were made. When you get back to civilization, you can hook your GPS unit into your computer and plot a map showing all the spots where you stopped and located new finds. A compass and map, although archaic to some, might be the only shot you have at getting back to your vehicle if the batteries die in your GPS. Take some time to learn the basics of map and compass reading just in case. Making sure you know where you are and where you’re going, can help make any geocaching trip a great success.
