Fun and Active Beach Game Ideas

Finding things to keep the family entertained on the beach this summer can be difficult, but there are numerous beach game ideas that cater for children and adults alike, especially if you want to remain active.

With summer fast approaching, it's no wonder we're all heading to the beach in search of sun and sand, which of course means beach games. They are a great way to keep fit and top up your tan, as well as entertaining the whole family. Avoid the usual arguments over activities this holiday by picking up a few ideas for beach games before you go. Once you know them, the only thing left to do is relax.

Games for the sand

  • Running on the sand is one of the best ways to keep fit, so to tone your legs, why not try some running races with friends and family. It’s one of the easiest beach games as it requires no equipment. Simply draw your start and finish lines in the sand and go!You could also try a steeple chase to make it more interesting, as the course can be as long or as short as you want.

  • Beach volleyball is also a favourite beach past time. Of course you need two teams, so if you're in a group it’s a great way to get everyone involved, and have fun in the sun together. The rules are simple; keep the ball off the floor, hit it over the net and make sure it stays within the lines.

  • For particularly hot days, water fights can be especially refreshing, just make sure you have an open space so innocent bystanders aren't soaked.

Games for the sea

  • If you're brave enough get off the beach and try out some beach games in the water. A great game to play with young children is a race from the sea back up the beach. A bucket is set about 10 metres from the sea and the object of the game is to fill your bucket first. You must cup your hands to fill them with water and race up to the bucket. This is repeated until one person fills their bucket and wins the game. It’s a surprisingly entertaining and extremely active beach game.

  • Finding shells in the shallow part of the sea can also be an interesting way to while away the day. Often the best shells turn up where the waves break, as the sand is dislodged. Have fun comparing shells and collecting only the best ones: just make sure they’re empty!

  • Most beach games are cheap and easy, meaning you can have a worthwhile day out without a massive price tag. So get sorted this summer and have fun in the sun!
