It is important for young children to get adequate exercise everyday especially with the growing rate of obesity, but sometimes finding the best exercises for children, not to mention finding the time within a busy schedule, is difficult for most parents.
It is important for all people to exercise, but it is even more important for young children to set the tone for their adult life. Obesity is growing at an alarming rate and a large reason for this is a lack of exercise. Other reasons include genetics and eating habits. While some of the causes are out of your control, adequate exercise is well within your limits. There are several exercises for children and opportunities for them to be more active.
Activities for children
- Most parents are busy and do not have the time to actively organize activities for their children. However, that is not an excuse to have inactive children. There are several after school activities, clubs, and sports to get involved with that organize exercises for children.
- It is important for parents to work around their schedules and participate in their children’s activities as much as possible. Sharing in their wins and being proud of their accomplishments will keep them excited about playing hard and exercising.
Fun ways to exercise with children
- There are a number of ways you can get directly involved in your child's exercises. Modify push-ups, sit-ups, and other exercises to fit their abilities. Perform the exercises with them for encouragement. If they have any siblings, relatives, or friends around try to get a friendly competition going. Have fun biking or roller skating around the neighborhood. Try biking, running, or roller skating up hills and other tough terrain for maximum exertion.
- Dancing is also a great way to get children to exercise without them even knowing their exercising. Simply turn on the music and start dancing. This is a great cardiovascular workout if the moves are vigorous enough and a great exercise for children.
