While Rex or Fido may well be timeless dog names, it is not altogether unusual to hear a male dog owner calling out "Frodo" or "Bilbo" to her male Labrador Retriever who bears a dog name that is taken from the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit. And of course Harry Potter is a source of new male dog names, with Harry perhaps even being chosen as an irreverent jibe at the prince who bears that time honored human male name.
Getting it Just Right
Male names from the news may also be selected as dog names by politically incorrect owners of male dogs. Naming a harmless little toy poodle or a gentle male golden retriever Osama would certainly raise some ears, canine and human alike. Considering that any male dog is indeed a son of a female dog, with all of the connotations that this conveys, choosing dog names from among the names borne by male criminals or dictators is a great way of ensuring that your male dog will stand out from the pack as far as names are concerned. Ronnie and Reggie make for two interesting dog names, even if calling a dog Shipman might just be going a little too far. While Adolf might be considered downright offensive to many, Attila might well be an original choice among dog names to be bestowed upon a kindly Newfoundland.
According to type
Dog names that inversely reflect the size and nature of a canine companion are another trend among owners of male dogs. An ursine ten or twelve stone male St. Bernard named Tiny or even Twiggy is not unheard of, and creative dog names for Chihuahuas might include Bear, Leo, or Brontosaurus (shortened to Bronto because dogs often do not respond to overly long dog names). And a white Samoyed named Nero would actually be bearing one of the most common dog names, even if it is usually reserved for breeds of much darker pigment.
And creative owners of Dalmatians can select dog names such as Tiger or Simba that refer to animals of a much different genus, species, colour pattern, and nature.
