Essential Travel Equipment for Backpackers

Getting the right travel equipment is a must when planning a backpacking trip, as the space in your backpack is precious and lighter gear will benefit you in the long run.

Backpacking abroad can become very strenuous very quickly so having the right travel equipment takes a lot of careful planning. Many people find that they have either taken too much or too little when it's too late. But by following simple guidelines you should be well prepared for an exciting and memorable trip.

Essentials
  • One of the most important things to pack is water and plenty of it. Water is the number one thing that you should have among your travel equipment. It is like most things, as you don't notice its true  importance until you don't have any. Always be prepared and carry empty bottles so you can fill them up wherever you can.

  • A first aid kit is also essential. Small ones can be picked up for a reasonable price at your local pharmacist.

  • Never underestimate the value of a knife! When travelling through thick bushes or forestry, a good small knife comes in more handy than you would think.

Unnecessary

  • Books are often brought by people on their travels but usually this leads to regret. Most of them end up being way too big and take up too much room. If you do decide to bring one, keep it small and light.

  • Another unnecessary piece of travel equipment is MP3 players and other electronics. Sure they seem like a great idea at the beginning but these items require recharging or batteries which can be hard to come by if you are in a remote area. Perhaps this space could be better used for something more beneficial, like a compass for example. Besides, isn't the reason you are backpacking to take in the local culture instead of listening to the latest pop songs on your Ipod?
