Au pair Activity Ideas

For any au pair, coming up with activity ideas is an important part of their job role, but it need not be an overwhelming task as there are plenty of simple and easy to perform interests out there.

Life can be quite tricky for an au pair. Adapting to a foreign country, learning to live with a new family, and coping with homesickness are not easy. For those just starting out in this role, coming up with activity ideas might seem like a daunting task. Factors such as a child’s age, the weather, time of year, and time restraints can greatly impact what au pairs choose to do with children. It is best then to remember that simple activities are often the most enjoyable and the most suitable for both child and au pair.

Inside, but not cooped up

  • The list of indoor activity ideas is lengthy. One thing that is both educational and enjoyable is reading, regardless of the age of the child or children being taken care of. Try taking turns in reading a suitable book, which will provide stimulation for all involved. Alternatively, an au pair can utilize any cooking skills they have. Allowing a child to be involved with food preparation and baking provides stimulus whilst making a mess in the kitchen is always an excitable undertaking. Music is also an enjoyable pastime, whether listening to popular or classical music, playing an instrument, or just learning how to make different sounds.

The great outdoors

  • Remember, the great outdoors should always feature on any list of activity ideas. Au pairs should consider taking their stays for a walk, preferably in a green area. Parks and town gardens allow for fresh air and a stimulating environment. If possible, visit somewhere with animals, be it a zoo, petting farm, or just the local squirrel infested park. An interesting array of creatures is likely to pique a child’s interest. Of course, no trip outdoor is complete without a visit to the play park. Regular exercise, such as climbing and running, is generally healthier in the long term.
